Wanda Walker

A graduate of Bennett College, Wanda served the institution for more than 20 years. Bennett is one of only two HBCUs for women in the country. Wanda oversaw the One Night Only event with Oprah Winfrey and coordinated the fundraiser with President Bill Clinton and Senator Bob Dole; both events raised dollars for scholarships. She was also responsible for writing and refreshing web content for the website. Working in conjunction with the College’s Institutional Advancement Department and the Office of the President, she served as a regular spokesperson for the College and managed the operations of the department including public relations, media relationships, photo/video coverage of Belles as they matriculated, press releases, institutional publications, as well as all marketing collateral produced by the college. She led the design, preparation, and printing of The Belle Ringer, the magazine for alumnae and friends.

Since 2015, Wanda has been employed by Guilford County Schools, the third-largest district in the state, which serves more than 70,000 students and has approximately 10,000 employees.

As the former director of communications, Wanda was responsible for internal and external communications, media relations, social media, and oversight of GCSTV, the district’s 24/7 television station. She led communications efforts involving the search and installation of two superintendents, a tornado that destroyed three elementary schools, a facilities study that indicated more than $2 billion in capital need and improvements for our schools, COVID and remote learning, reopening schools after the pandemic; absenteeism; the passage of two school construction bonds totaling $1.7 billion and the strategic direction launch. For the past year, Wanda has been serving as the Senior Executive Director for Community Engagement and Equity. She has oversight of community outreach, parent engagement, stakeholder engagement, diversity, equity and inclusion, and the district’s special events.

Wanda is honored to serve as a director on this board.
