Advocacy

Hammond The Arc is national movement that believes advocacy as "vital in improving and sustaining quality of life" for people with intellectual disabilities at both the individual and larger community level. The Arc of Greensboro focuses on three key advocacy strategies:

  • Helping people with special needs access the benefits and services to which they are entitled. Each year, The Arc of Greensboro responds to more than 2,000 requests for individual advocacy. Those advocacy efforts range from providing basic information about a particular agency to offering guidance and support to establish eligibility for vital services, especially when individuals are denied benefits or services to which they are entitled. The Arc's collaborative relationships with a broad network of community service providers enhance our advocacy work.
  • Influencing legislative decisions and public policies to improve quality of life for people with intellectual disabilities. The Arc maintains a strong legislative action center in Washington and Raleigh where people with disabilities, their families and advocates can access the most current information on legislative and public policy issues. That legislative advocacy was key to passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as well as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
  • Greensboro Self Advocacy Group Sponsoring the Greensboro Self Advocate Group (GSAG), a peer-led advocacy group for adults with intellectual disabilities. Self advocacy offers participants opportunities to be involved in decisions that affect their lives. Every year GSAG members elect officers who make decisions about fundraising, membership and guest speakers. Monthly GSAG meetings include guest speakers who share information about voting, laws that directly affect people with disabilities, self-protection, medications and other relevant topics.
