In November 2007, the Hillsdale Fund awarded The Arc of Greensboro a grant to launch an innovative therapeutic art program for people with developmental disabilities. In partnership with professional artist Bob Postma, who runs the Exceptional Friends Art Studio in Greensboro, Beyond the Canvas encourages participants to express their creative talents and build their self-esteem. 
Artists take part in weekly painting classes under a master-apprentice program that helps them learn to follow direction, develop patience, build self-confidence and recognize the value of productivity – all of which carry over into their social and vocational interactions. Paintings are available for a suggested donation of $100 to help sustain the program.
